A 32-year-old British man from Peterborough is now being treated as the only suspect by detectives following the mass stabbing on board an LNER train from Doncaster to London last night.

Officers initally arrested two men at the scene in Huntington, but one of the suspects, a 35-year-old man, has been released without charge after the police confirmed that he was not involved in the attack.

The 32-year-old remains in custody and has been charged with attempted murder.

An LNER rail staff member who tried to stop the attack remains in life-threatening condition, and five others have now been discharged from hospital.

Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy is leading the police response into the attack. Speaking earlier at a press conference, he said: “Our investigation is moving at pace and we are confident we are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

“As would be expected, specialist detectives are looking into the background of the suspect we have in custody and the events that led up to the attack.”
