An inquest heard that former “Lostprophets” frontman and convicted paedophile Ian Watkins died from a stab wound to the neck following a violent attack at HMP Wakefield earlier this month.
The 48-year-old was serving a 29-year prison sentence for a series of child sex offences, including the attempted rape of a baby, when he was fatally attacked on Saturday, 11 October.
During a hearing at Wakefield Coroner’s Court this morning, Coroner Oliver Longstaff confirmed that Warkins died from an “incision wound to his neck” after a post-mortem examination.
Two men, Samuel Dodswoth, aged 43, and Rico Gedel, aged 25, have been charged with murder in connection with Watkins’ death.
Both are yet to enter a plea but are expected to appear at Leeds Crown Court in November to be arraigned.
Two other inmates, aged 23 and 39, were also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder but were returned to prison with no charges brought against them so far.
Emergency services were called to the high-security prison at around 9.39 am on the morning of the attack, but Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Watkins was jailed in 2013 after admitting multiple child sex offences, including conspiring to rape a child and possessing indecent images.
The court at the time described his crimes as “plunging into new depths of depravity”.
He had also previously survived another attack in prison in 2023, when he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The inquest has been adjourned to a date yet to be confirmed, pending the outcome of the ongoing associated murder trial.
