Parking charges in York will temporarily change during the popular Christmas Market, as part of plans approved in the council’s 2025 budget.
From Wednesday 13 November to Sunday 22 December, parking rates between Sunday and Thursday will increase to match the current Friday and Saturday rate across selected city centre car parks.
According to the City of York Council, the change aims to help balance the city’s transport budget, following public feedback in last year’s consultation in which 62% of respondents supported higher parking charges for major events as an alternative to further service cuts.
Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport, said: “All income generated from parking goes back into transport in the city. We are spending more than ever before on highways maintenance and are also investing in our bus network and in walking and cycling routes to help residents and visitors to travel sustainably.”
The updated rates will apply at Bootham Row, Castle, Coppergate, Esplanade, Foss Bank, Marygate, Monk Bar, Nunnery Lane, St George’s Field and Union Terrace car parks.
Car parks at Bishopthorpe Road, East Parade and Rowntree Park will remain at their current rates.
On-street parking changes will also apply to central city locations, including Carmelite Street, Lord Mayor’s Walk, North Street, Piccadilly, Skeldergate, Tanner’s Moat, Bishophill Senior, Cromwell Road, Cumberland Street, George Street, Leadmill Lane, Lower Friargate, Lower Priory Street, Margaret Street, Foss Islands Road (for large vehicles) and Walmgate.
Evening parking prices will also be adjusted on Fossgate, St Denys Road, Stonebow, Lawrence Street, Micklegate and Priory Street.
All charges will revert to their current levels on 22 December, following the close of the market.
Park & Ride buses will start at 5.30 am and run until 10.30 pm, allowing more flexibility to enjoy York’s festive celebrations.
Councillor Ravilious added: “Catching the bus, travelling by train, cycling and walking all help to keep the city moving at what is one of the busiest times of year.”
