West Yorkshire Police have sacked a police officer over gross misconduct after an inquiry found that she engaged in an ‘inappropriate’ relationship with a suspected drug dealer.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was found guilty of gross misconduct by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins, of West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate, said: “This officer did the complete opposite of what we expect officers to do, which is to bring criminals to justice.

In 2022 the officer gave her number to a man whilst off duty, despite knowing that he was taking part in ‘serious criminal activity.’ She then failed to tell the force about the extent of the relationship, despite being referred to a proffessional standards board.

During the course of the relationship, the officer also responded to a report of drug-dealing involving the man but failed to properly record or investigate it.

Det Ch Supt Wilkins added: “We make it very clear to all police officers, staff and volunteers that they must declare any personal contact with notifiable associations including criminals. This is crucial to prevent any conflict of interest and to maintain public confidence in the police.

“This officer failed to do that and actively lied about the extent of this relationship. Her actions are completely unacceptable and have no place in policing.”

This is the second time in two weeks that a West Yorkshire Police officer has been dismissed over gross misconduct, after David Miller was sacked last week over inappropriate comments.
